Apple's education event is getting seriously over-hyped →
Philip Elmer-DeWitt:
The goal is to sell more iPads to schools, not to destroy the textbook industry. “This whole event is being blown out of proportion,” [said] a former Apple executive talking about the media drumroll for the education announcement the company is scheduled to make Thursday.
Excessive media hype being generated around an Apple event? Perish the thought.
Also: have you noticed that the way this cycle goes always follows the same pattern? Rumors in the media start; Apple sends out a press invitation that’s just one or two sentences; the media goes into fever mode; by the day of the event, blogs and opinion writers are bitching about Apple’s hype machine. The only contribution to the cycle that Apple actually makes? The one-sentence press release. 99% of the Apple hype machine is not Apple. You could argue that’s a sign of just how good Apple is at this game—but let’s not let the media off that easy.
