Google buying Meebo →

Business Insider describes Meebo as “the online chat startup that reinvented itself as an ad play,” by which they mean Meebo is behind one of those aggravating, invasive “content sharing bars” that attach themselves like click-to-bite lampreys onto certain web sites—usually the sites of newspapers, magazines and other “old media” companies who have yet to understand that infuriating readers is, in the long run, perhaps not the business model.

Google has a history of shutting down services they buy and doing absolutely nothing obvious with them later. I sincerely hope that’s the strategy they’re going to follow with Meebo.
