Dan Seifert, The Verge:
Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate, News Corporation, announced today that the two new companies being formed from its split will be called Fox Group and News Corporation. The company is being split to separate the media and entertainment side of the business from its news coverage.
Most of the tech press is specifically covering the end of The Daily, the “first iPad-only newspaper,” but that’s actually just one part of a pretty major shakeup at News Corp.
And in fact, the headline that I quoted above — “News Corp to split off Fox Group entertainment business” — isn’t really accurate. The actual split is between publishing and film and television. The point of this exercise is ultimately to ensure that if the print periodical business proves either unsalvageable or needs to be radically downsized in an online future, it’s not going to drag the TV business down with it.
