While I’ve seen this basic thing done before, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done better than Jason Evanish’s take here.
I live down in Silicon Valley proper, even farther away than the two peninsula cities he mentions (“Palo Alto and Mountain View are farther away than you think”); a drive from where I am to the heart of San Francisco is only about fifty miles and and not much more than a hour, but it’s remarkable how few people seem to travel between those two locales unless it’s required for a commute. Which is unfortunate, because there’s interesting places all over the Bay. That said, I suspect if I ended up with a job that was actually in “The City,” I’d end up moving: even a commute via regional public transit, which is pretty good in this area despite all the crap it’s given (I suspect by people who’ve never actually lived in areas with bad public transit), would drive me nuts after a while. I suspect I’d move to Oakland, though, where rents are merely too high as opposed to batshit crazy.
